Olympic lifts are often used as a big parts of sports performance programs. They are a great tool that helps develop power. Many sports require athletes to display power. Whether you’re a basketball player going up for a dunk or defensive tackle trying to burst through the line, you need to be able to apply explosive force off the ground. Training explosive hip extension is one of the best ways to get an athlete to develop power. As I mentioned Oly lifts, such as the power clean, are great for this. However, Oly lifts are complex and require large amounts of time and skill to perfect. One of our favorite exercise that closely mimics “triple extension” found in a power clean is the tire flip. By using the tire flip it allows our athletes to reach “triple extension” and display power without spending hours trying to learn new movements.
